Healthy Business Owner, Healthy Business – Why Exercise Is Key for Entrepreneurs

We all know that it’s important to take care of our bodies. But as a busy entrepreneur, it’s tempting to set aside personal wellness so you can focus on what really matters: building your business. Right? Wrong! Ironically, you can only be at your best as an entrepreneur when you are also at your best physically. That means exercise is one of the key ingredients in making a happy, successful business owner.

What kind of exercise is necessary for you to start seeing the benefits in your entrepreneurial efforts? Fortunately for all you folks with full work schedules, you don’t have to dedicate hours every day to sweating it out in the gym. Studies show that only 75 minutes of vigorous activity or about 3 hours of moderate activity are all that’s required each week for you to experience better health. That seems manageable, doesn’t it?

Get Inspired to Live Well.

Here are just a few reasons why exercise is so crucial for you, your health, and your business:

  1. You’ll probably live longer. This is a big one! Weekly exercise can lower blood pressure, regulate blood sugar and insulin levels, strengthen bones, help with weight loss (or help with weight gain if you are trying to put on muscle in the gym), and improve overall heart health. All these and more can work together to give you a longer, more active life.

  2. Your mood will improve. Exercise works on the brain and the mind as much as it works on the body. Regular movement helps lower cortisol levels; cortisol is the “stress hormone,” meaning that decreased cortisol results in decreased stress throughout your day. Exercise can also release dopamine, which helps the human mind focus, work hard, and find pleasure and interest in day-to-day subjects.

  3. You will have more energy. The hormones released during exercise contribute to an alert, quicker-thinking mind. They also help your body feel more lively during the day. You’ll be able to keep moving and grooving through your work schedule with less need to take a power nap.

  4. You’ll become more creative. Exercise improves neuroplasticity – your brain’s ability to adapt and learn. You might find yourself catching onto novel ideas faster or coming up with new plans to further your business. You’ll also be able to start thinking outside the box more easily, an essential skill for an entrepreneur.

  5. You might start sleeping better. Exercise can regulate your sleeping schedule by keeping you awake during the day and helping you get sleepy at night. Everybody wants a good night’s sleep! And it’s especially important for you as an entrepreneur; you need to rest when you can so you can hit the ground running the next day.

Start Moving with These Simple Tips.

This is all well and good. But if you don’t know how to incorporate exercise into your day, you won’t get any of these benefits. Let’s dive into some of the easy, practical types of exercise you can start building into your weekly schedule:

  1. Go for a nice walk. A few 15-minute walk sessions each day can drastically improve your health and your mental state. Switch out your afternoon cup of coffee with a short stroll. Walk or bike to your workspace if it is a short commute. Even just a quick march up and down some stairs will help!

  2. Start stretching. When you wake up in the morning, do a few stretches while your coffee is brewing. Touch your toes, reach your hands to the sky, swing your arms, stretch your back. Don’t forget to do this throughout the day as well. Taking a lunch break or stepping away from the laptop to clear your head? Do your stretches while you’re at it!

  3. Join a gym. A monthly gym membership may sound costly, but if it is available to you, it can be a valuable tool for the rest of your life! No need to start lifting the heaviest weights and competing with the biggest bodybuilders. Use their jump ropes or stationary bikes. Get familiar with the hand weights and kettlebells. Use the machines for light strength training and bodyweight exercises. Your options at the gym are nearly limitless.

  4. Find some friends who want to work out with you. Exercise is always more fun with buddies! If you have some teammates, invite them to join you on walks or bike rides. Meet people at the gym who are willing to show you some workouts. Join online communities for tips and potential meet-ups.

  5. Take advantage of free online resources. There are many free options on the internet for you to get exercise ideas. Just google the exercise you are interested in; you’ll likely find a video or article that will help you get started.

Your business will thank you for taking care of yourself. Your teammates and customers or prospects will be inspired by your improved energy and creativity. And you will not regret starting to move more. It’s a simple rule that Newton phrased well: “An object in motion tends to stay in motion.” Once you start moving, it will be hard for you to stop!
